Up to 4 TECH DIVERS
LET'S DO THIS!
Because of the added liability, tech diving prices for the Oriskany are $200.00 for pretty
much every charter in Pensacola. I don't recommend diving with any charter that would
charge you less. Because of the popularity of the Oriskany, many new and inexperienced
charters have come onto the scene looking to make a quick buck. These charters are
willing to cut their prices because they are desperate and unaware of the details and extra
effort that are required to safely cater to tech divers. Many of these "dive" boats are
strictly fishing boats with single engines outboards and recreational swimming ladders.
They are often unqualified to perform first-aid and have no emergency oxygen onboard.
These are inexperienced fishing charter captains that are unfamiliar with tieing-in to the
wreck and have never dove the Oriskany.
Techies, this wreck is so huge and relatively shallow for tech diving that the temptation is
very strong to go further into her than you had planned. It is imperative that you make a
smart dive plan and stick to it. Once inside the hangar bay, it is pitch black regardless of
how many lights you bring. This can be the best dive of your life if you seriously stick to
your dive plan. You must use your head, your training, and your common sense. It is
recommended that you make one long dive profile, especially if the surface conditions are
rough.
The Oriskany is one of the most challenging tech dives in the world because of the ever
present temptation to go easily deeper and further than you planned.
Don't let inexperienced or self-promoting tech divers (who write more forum posts than
actually dive) tell you that the Oriskany is a cake walk. Temptation makes this dive
challenging not the conditions. Keep in mind that structural plans may be useless or
serve only to get you lost because when she sank many of her thin metal bulk heads
collapsed or shifted under the pressure of the in flowing water. In some places there are
no walls where there should be and in others there are walls where they shouldn't be.
Divers,
Since the sinking of the Oriskany our little known dive paradise has become world renown.
It seems since the sinking of the Mighty-O on May 17th, 2006 that the number of Pensacola's
expert experienced tech divers grew from a handful that lived at the local dive shop to
hundreds who live and only dive on Internet dive forums. If you're not one of these posers, I'm
sure you know at least one. I don't tech dive, I'm merely a recreational instructor and captain,
but It's my job to keep these tech posers off my boat for their sake, your sake and my safe. As
you can imagine, tech posers get awfully mad when I refuse to charter them. If you have any
questions about the information on my website or our charters please don't hesitate to contact
me. If you don't hear it straight from the horse's mouth, you're probably hearing it from a cow.
1 Tech Diver $300.00 2- 4 Tech Divers $200.00 each
Up to 4 tech divers max, You'll be more comfortable on my smaller boat than the larger boats. I won't lie, it can get wet, but you'll be comfortably sitting in a bean bag not on a 2x8 wooden board.
